Research Cooperation with Rwanda in Applied Macroeconomics

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The applied macroeconomic research cooperation project in Rwanda within the GIZ programme “Macroeconomic advice for poverty reduction” aimed at strengthening research capacities and knowledge in its partner institutions.
ICON-INSTITUT provided services to support the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN) in strengthening its capacities for macroeconomic management related to the procedures undertaken by the Ministry´s economic policy experts to base them on a sufficient degree on sound macroeconomic analysis. Further, the National Planning and Research Directorate at MINECOFIN, the National Investment Committee (NIC), and other relevant stakeholders were supported by focusing on national public investment prioritisation, investment financing, investment implementation and evaluation of the public and private investment agenda. Hereby, ICON could enhance the professionalisation of related institutions concerning the planning and financing of national projects, the installation of structures for the use of new and innovative financing instruments as well as promotion of inter-institutional cooperation. ICON advised in terms of technical capacity of economic researchers via training courses and on-the-job training as well as training of trainers, promoted discussions around key economic development challenges and policy issues, and supported the establishment of network for research cooperation that sustainably strengthens the MINECOFIN’s and National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda’s (NISR) capacities for macroeconomic management, national investment planning and finance. ICON conducted a training needs assessment, training seminars, training of trainers and elaborated research papers. ICON developed Curricular and analysed the possibilities of a MA / PhD programme.
