The Gender at the Centre Initiative (GCI), launched in 2019 with a budget of USD 13.2 million, aims to promote gender equality in education across eight focus countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The initiative, supported by G7 Ministers, operates as a multi-stakeholder partnership through the GCI Alliance, which includes various coordinating institutions, technical partners, civil society organizations, intergovernmental bodies, development partners, and Ministries of Education.
GCI's first phase (2019–2023) focused on enhancing coordination among state and non-state actors, employing strategies such as policy support, capacity building, research, advocacy, and community engagement to foster gender-transformative education. An independent final evaluation was commissioned by IIEP-UNESCO and conducted by ICON to assess GCI's achievements, identify lessons learned, and provide recommendations for the next phase (2024–2026). The evaluation is intended to inform future actions and enhance the effectiveness of GCI in promoting gender equality in education.
