Small Business Initiative – Building Effective Business Membership Organisations

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Support to Mongolian Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) can be manifold. While ICON-INSTITUT already engaged in strengthening the SME infrastructure by developing specified institutions such as, wood, printing, tourism as well as wool, cashmere and textiles, the current contribution of ICON-INSTUTUT supports business membership organisations (BMOs). A dozen of which are being supported in improving their organisational strategy and managerial capacities, in the offer of new membership services to SMEs and, hence, improving the local SME support infrastructure. Among other activities, ICON-INSTITUT helps BMOs to develop 3-year business plans, to manage their human resources and to improve their internal structure. After specialised trainings the BMO staff is able to improve their associations, by mak-ing use of networking, financial management or by transparent board elections. Courses on revenue generation and increase in dues-paying members allow the BMOs wider financial sustainability. Due to ICON-INSTITUT’s strong engagement, the BMOs’ digitalisation process was improved. The use of membership data bases and online exchange portal the management efficiency of the associations increases substantially. Web-seminars with international experts’ input encourage knowledge exchange and increase the outreach to SMEs of newly developed marketing and communication strategies.
