PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Global Programme “Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience” (GV ESRS), implemented by GIZ over the period 2014-2026 in 12 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Madagascar, Togo, Yemen, Zambia) under the special initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on “Transforming Agriculture and Food Systems”, aimed at improving the resilience of people at risk of malnutrition – especially women of childbearing age and small children – towards food crisis, such as climate or economic related crisis.

Designed to address food security and malnutrition through a multi-sectoral approach (modelled after the UNICEF Conceptual Framework on the Determinants of Maternal and Child Nutrition), the GV ESRS implemented home gardens in several countries, as a key technical approach to improve nutrition by ensuring year-round food availability, promoting diversified diets, and empowering women at the household level.

ICON was assigned to conduct a study of the experiences, effects/impacts and knowledge created through the implementation of different home garden models, and to identify key success factors and obstacles to the design and implementation of 'home garden' interventions.

By systematically capturing and analysing country-specific experiences across multiple regions, this study plays a critical role in GIZ’s knowledge management. The results will contribute to the institutionalization of best practices, facilitating the transfer of successful approaches to other countries, and supporting GIZ’s goal of fostering sustainable, resilient food systems and improving food security through evidence-based strategies.
