PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The European Union, in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), implemented a 5-year, EUR 3.8 million support programme aimed at fostering SME development in Mongolia. ICON-INSTITUT together with Applicatio was contracted to implement the key component of this initiative “Building Effective Associations Intervention,” which sought to enhance the performance of Mongolian business associations in supporting the SME sector.
The primary objectives of the programme were to improve the performance of 12-17 Mongolian business associations by helping them engage in goal setting, develop organizational strategies, improve advocacy skills, and create standardized SME training courses. The project focused on capacity building within business associations through several key initiatives. First, it established a best-practice business model by educating association leaders on effective management techniques. This included coaching them in setting and implementing goals, and developing strategies that emphasize value for money. Between 5-10 associations participated in these "Establish Business Model" activities. Additionally, the project worked to improve the quality of member services provided by associations. It emphasized the importance of financial sustainability through a membership-based revenue model, complemented by other value-added services. To achieve this, the project trained association leaders on results-based advocacy and introduced a training series focused on SME development. Seven associations participated in these "Improve Member Services" activities.
Through these efforts, the project significantly strengthened the capacity of Mongolian business associations to better serve the SME sector, providing them with tools to become more financially sustainable and effective in delivering valuable services to their members.
