PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The imbalances in the participation of women in science, research and innovation were pointed out by the European Commission over 15 years ago, when it adopted a Communication “Women and Science: mobilising women to enrich European research”. It set out a detailed number of measures to be undertaken by the Commission with the aim of ensuring a better integration of gender issues in research policy.

One of the measures in particular was the development of better indicators on the participation of women in research in Europe. The main objective of this project was the production of the She Figures 2018 in a key publication that presents ‘the situation and evolution of matters concerning gender equality in research and innovation including consideration of gender in research and innovation content’, extensively consulted by policy makers, researchers, stakeholders and the media.

ICON-INSTITUT worked on methodological development, data gathering and processing, yielding to the statistics and indicators necessary for monitoring the progress towards gender equality in science. Necessary sex-disaggregated data was compiled, and the indicators needed were calculated in order to produce a She Figure booklet.
