PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Since 2009 the DAAD has been supporting five major projects within the scope of the programme “Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation – exceed. Exceed’s objective is to bundle the existing commitment of German higher education institutions and their partners in developing countries and to make it more publicly visible. The initiative also intends to build bridges and make the potential of the higher education institutions usable for the German and international development cooperation.

ICON-INSTITUT conducted a final evaluation to assess Exceed’s 10 year successful existence and to formulate relevant recommendations or possible adaptations for a new programme concept. The achievements realised by the Exceed programme and the five projects over the years are remarkable, since managed to strengthen the position of German institutions in development cooperation; set up broad networks of different kinds; capacitate institutions in Development Cooperation (DC) by linking them to an international agenda and network; educate and train Master’s and PhD students; train (future) academic staff; develop Master’s programmes; conduct joint research; and organise international workshops and conferences in relation to SDG challenges. The networks are mostly built on existing networks and are heavily empowered through Exceed. As global research communities, they will continue to add value and to help realise the 2030 Agenda, as the network outputs – such as developed curricula, research, network tools (databases) – are considered to be sustainable results of the programme.
