Nexus on Climate and Nutrition

Desk Study of the Nexus on Climate, Nutrition and Social Security in Cambodia

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Cambodia is regularly ranked amongst the countries most vulnerable to climate change. This is due to a combination of its geography, relatively high reliance on agriculture, forestry and fisheries and low adaptive capacity. Over 80% of the population live in rural areas and are overly exposed to increasing, more unpredictable floods and prolonged droughts. Unsustainable exploitation of natural resources and limited water management systems further compromise the coping strategies of rural communities and increase food security concerns.

In this context, the “Multisectoral Food and Nutrition Security in Cambodia” (MUSEFO) project, as part of the Global Programme (GP) for “Food Security and Resilience Strengthening”, aims to improve the nutritional situation and resilience to food and hunger crises at the household level of food-insecure people, especially women of reproductive age, young children up to 2 years and small-scale farmers. With urbanization and industrialization identified as major trends for the coming decade, additional climate change-related challenges are also emerging both in relation to adaptation and mitigation in urban areas.

ICON-INSTITUT has conducted a desk study of the nexus on climate, nutrition and social security for the MUSEFO project. The study served to identify the most important challenges and socio-economic and financial risks, but also opportunities for further improving the Food Nutrition Security and social security systems of the target group. By this, ICON-INSTITUT has contributed to sharpen the orientation of the project activities towards more climate-resilient and climate-adaptive interventions.
