Strengthening Pre-Service Teacher Education in Myanmar (STEM)

Final Evaluation of Phase II of the Strengthening Pre-Service Teacher Education in Myanmar (STEM)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In many parts of the world the insufficient number of trained teachers jeopardises the prospects for quality, inclusiveness and equity in education. According to UNESCO UIS, the SDG 4 goal cannot be reached without sufficient quality primary- and secondary-level teachers in classrooms.

Through the ‘Strengthening Pre-Service Teacher Education in Myanmar’ (STEM) project, UNESCO has been supporting the Myanmar Ministry of Education (MoE) in its reform of the Myanmar pre-service teacher education system. The STEM project will help the MoE, and particularly the Department of Higher Education (DHE), in upgrading Myanmar’s 25 Education Colleges (ECs), spread throughout the country, from 2-year diplomas to 4-year specialized programmes, with a focus on a new competency-based curriculum in line with international standards, human rights, gender equality and teacher rights.

ICON-INSTITUTE is conducting a final evaluation to assess the overall performance of the Phase II of the project and to provide recommendations and lessons learned firmly based on evidence. That means that the recommendations and lessons learned will especially be used by UNESCO in preparation of the Phase III and thus will support the realization of the teacher education reform agenda in Myanmar.
