PROJECT DESCRIPTION

EUROSTAT's collaboration with developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America aimed to share the knowledge and best practices of the European Statistical System (ESS) to support the development of modern statistical systems. Recognizing the ESS as a key reference for improving the quality of national data, these regions sought to adopt European methodologies to enhance their ability to design and monitor sustainable national and regional policies.

To facilitate this exchange, ICON-INSTITUT was contracted by EUROSTAT to organise a series of seminars during 2016-2017, with the primary goal of engaging national and regional statistical offices in these regions. The seminars focused on promoting the core values and initiatives of the ESS, offering practical insights and tools to help countries build more efficient and reliable statistical systems.

A total of four seminars were conducted as part of this initiative. The first seminar, held in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, focused on establishing frameworks for peer reviews in African countries, bringing together 42 participants. The second seminar in Bangkok, Thailand, addressed the challenges of strengthening national statistical systems to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with 56 participants in attendance. The third seminar, held in Santiago, Chile, explored the integration of non-traditional data sources into national statistical systems, attended by 57 participants. Finally, the fourth seminar in Pretoria, South Africa, concentrated on the peer review processes of African National Statistical Institutes, with 33 participants. Through these seminars, Eurostat fostered knowledge exchange and capacity building in key statistical areas, helping developing countries align their systems with European standards and improve the quality of their data for policy-making and development planning. The program successfully promoted the adoption of best practices, empowering national statistical offices to meet the growing demands of modern governance and sustainable development.
