PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The ‘Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management’ – SASSCAL - is a joint initiative of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Germany to address the challenges of global change beyond national boundaries The idea was to establish a regional science service centre in Southern Africa with a secretariat in Windhoek, Namibia in order to strengthen regional competence on climate change and adapted land use in cooperation with German expertise for research.

The programme was financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and contracted to ICON through the KfW (German Development Bank). The requested services of ICON comprised the support of the SASSCAL in the overall implementation process of the project – this included the institutional as well as the infrastructural set up integrating and reflecting the aspects of sustainability of the research work at the Science Service Centre in the building projects. ICON implemented 1) five infrastructure projects on the level of the Regional Secretariat and the National Nodes, 2) supported SASSCAL in institutional set-up and 3) contributed to the financial administration of the project.
