The project set out to evaluate and improve the tourism statistics system within the CARICOM region, focusing on developing and implementing Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA). Its goal was to assess the current state of tourism data and establish a strategic path forward, while also supporting specific member states in building a comprehensive and sustainable system for tourism statistics, including TSA compilation.
As part of the project, ICON-INSTITUT conducted an existing tourism statistical system. This review ensured that the system aligned with the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) recommendations for developing tourism statistics and TSAs. One of the major accomplishments was the creation of an inter-institutional platform that brought together various agencies—such as statistical offices, tourism authorities, ministries, and immigration departments—to collaborate in processing and sharing essential tourism-related data.
Additionally, the project provided significant training and support to ensure that member states had a thorough understanding of the UNWTO's International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics (IRTS) and the TSA: Recommended Methodological Framework (TSA). This was key to improving the use of national accounts and supply and use tables (SUTs) to build TSAs.
